Official Irish Seaweed Association (ISA) Launge at Trinity College Dublin

Ireland’s rich coastal waters have long been home to diverse seaweed species, used for centuries in food, farming, and natural remedies. But today, seaweed is more than a traditional staple — it’s a fast-growing sector with immense potential to contribute to climate resilience, food security, and economic development.

Recognizing this potential, the Irish Seaweed Association (ISA) has officially launched — bringing together growers, researchers, policy-makers, and businesses to drive sustainable growth in the seaweed sector.

Why Now?

Seaweed farming is gaining momentum globally, but in Ireland, a lack of cohesive representation has slowed progress. The ISA aims to change that by offering a unified voice for the industry. From licensing reform to research collaboration and value chain development, the association will advocate for solutions that support innovation while protecting marine ecosystems.

As outlined in a recent article from Trinity College Dublin, the ISA launch was not just symbolic — it was action-driven. Speakers highlighted the untapped opportunities in regenerative ocean farming, the need for investment and infrastructure, and the importance of knowledge-sharing across borders and sectors.

The timing was right: with increasing interest in ocean-based climate solutions and the funding from the EU Mission Ocean, the C-FAARER project provided the platform and resources needed to establish the ISA as a spin-off initiative.

A Meaningful Launch at Trinity College Dublin

The ISA was officially launched at Trinity College Dublin, bringing together stakeholders from across Ireland’s seaweed sector. The afternoon featured a dynamic exhibition showcasing seaweed innovators and companies, offering a glimpse into the cutting-edge work happening across the country. This was followed by a series of short pitches, where organisations and businesses presented their contributions to the growing industry.

The event concluded with the official launch of the Irish Seaweed Association, marked by a keynote speech from Gareth Murphy, Chair of the ISA.

Meet the Irish Seaweed Association

The ISA is a dynamic and inclusive network representing seaweed farmers across Ireland and island communities. Its mission is to strengthen the seaweed sector through collaboration, funding access, knowledge sharing, and advocacy—in both English and Gaeilge.

The ISA’s vision goes beyond just farming. With a focus on responsible aquaculture, the association supports environmentally regenerative and economically sustainable practices. Through research, education, and partnerships, it empowers members to take an active role in shaping the future of Ireland’s blue economy.

The ISA welcomes both Core Members (seaweed farmers) and Associate Members (processors, product developers, retailers, environmental groups, wild harvesters, and more). Members gain access to specialized resources, opportunities to collaborate with peers, a collective voice to influence policy, and expanded market opportunities.

Behind the ISA is a diverse board of passionate seaweed professionals from across the country:

With the board officially established and the chair and secretary now in place, we look forward to a continued and thriving ISA beyond the end of the C-FAARER project.
