Nordic Seaweed Conference
The 12th Nordic Seaweed Conference was held last week in Grenaa, Denmark, with around 100 seaweed enthusiasts participating.
The conference had 25 presentations, and attendees also visited PureAlgae to look at their facilities for growing Ulva lactuca. A delicious dinner with seaweed in all dishes, including dessert, was served, and many nice seaweed products from Sweden, Denmark, and Germany were available for tasting.
Many ongoing projects were presented, and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) looking into the seaweed value chain and the carbon footprints showed that it is quite complicated but very interesting for the industry.
Susan Løvstad Holdt from DTU gave a take-home message: remember to rinse your kelp and eat it with soy sauce, as they do in Japan. It is probably due to the high iodine content that they can eat so much.
Overall, the conference was a great success, with a lot of knowledge exchange and ambitious ideas between scientists, existing companies, and upcoming entrepreneurs. The development of seaweed products is progressing, and the industry is looking into the seaweed value chain and the carbon footprints, which is a promising sign for the future of seaweed as a tool for emission capture and utilization.
In conclusion, the 12th Nordic Seaweed Conference was a great opportunity for seaweed enthusiasts to come together and share their knowledge and ideas. The conference showcased the potential of seaweed as a tool for emission capture and utilization, and the development of seaweed products is progressing. Remember to rinse your kelp and eat it with soy sauce!
