Introduction to the C-FAARER Advisory Board

To bolster this ambitious initiative, C-FAARER has brought together a diverse Advisory Board comprising experts in environmental sustainability, regional development, and aquaculture, ensuring comprehensive representation across the entire value chain. Our Advisors, who convene via virtual meetings every quarter, contribute their invaluable expertise and extensive networks to empower the project to reach its maximum potential. They collaborate on concrete dissemination strategies with project partners and platforms (CNEP) to ensure the widespread adoption of project outcomes in Ireland and other European regions.

Wayne Murphy, HATCH, Cork, Ireland

A Co-Founder and Partner at Hatch, a global VC focused on the Aquaculture and Alternative Seafood sector. Hatch launched the world's 1st Aquaculture Accelerator in 2018 and Wayne leads all accelerator and innovation program-related activity in addition to now heading up Hatch’s Hawaii-based projects expanding Hatch’s presence, opportunity and network in the US and the Americas.

Niall has over 16 years of experience working roles in the Seafood industry since graduating University College Cork in 2007.

Elisabete da Costa, BLUEBIO Alliance Cantanhede, Portugal

Elisabete da Costa has graduated in Industrial Chemistry from the University of Coimbra, received her Ph.D. in Sustainable Chemistry at the University of Aveiro entitled "High added-value products from macroalgae: lipids as bioactive compounds", a partnership between the University of Aveiro and ALGAPlus company. Recently, she pursued Post-Doctoral Research Fellows within the project AQUAMINN and the European framework GENIALG – Genetic diversity exploitation for innovative macro-alga biorefinery (ANR-15-MRSE-0015) funded by European Union’s Horizon 2020 Programme.


Currently, she is working on the integrated marine and maritime policy for the North Sea and other oceans with a focus on the Sustainable Blue Economy. By stakeholder engagement and facilitating public-private collaborations, we are working on the realization of multi-use innovations e.g. energy-, food production and natural restoration.

Nathalie Scheidegger, Noordzee


Dr Nuala McQuaid, DAERA Marine and Fisheries Division, Belfast, Northern Ireland

Marine and coastal environment conservation, methods of sustainable cultivation and harvesting, cleaner seas, promoting biodiversity, public education.


Nico Buytendijk, Noordzee

Specialties: Analytical, result-oriented, focused on the main points, people-oriented, connecting, open and approachable, stimulating and driven.

Ian Brannigan, Western Development Commission, Ireland

Regional development, ecosystem services, SME aquaculture growth and support.


Dr Maiken Bjørkan, Nordlandsforskning, Norway

She holds a PhD from the Norwegian college of fisheries science, where she worked from 2005-2014, and a master in anthropology from UiB and a master in international fisheries management from UiT.

Dr Chiara Lombardi, ENEA, Italy

Currently working as a marine ecologist at the Marine Environment Research Centre ENEA of La Spezia (Italy). She holds a PhD in Experimental Ecology. Her main research focus is the investigation of marine bryozoans' - calcifying marine invertebrates -biomineralization processes and life-history responses, and the identification of their role (resilience or extinction?) under multiple global environmental drivers e.g. warming, acidification, hypoxia, etc.


Lucy Watson, BIM, Ireland

She is a focused and determined project manager with a proven track record in delivering key projects, documents and publications on budget and on time, both nationally and internationally. She works with colleagues across the organisation on the development of their five strategic pillars, sustainability, skills, innovation, competitiveness and leadership in the Irish seafood sector.
